شهاب‌الدین ابوالفضل احمدبن علی معروف به اِبن‌حَجَر عَسقلانی کِنانی مصری رحمه الله ، از علمای بزرگ حدیث و فقه شافعی، مورخ، و کتابدار.
ابن‌حجر در فقه، حدیث، و تفسیر تبحّر داشت. در ۸۱۱ (قمری) وظیفه افتاء در دارالعدل به ابن‌حجر محول گردید. ابن حجر علاوه بر فتوی به ایراد خطبه در مساجد مصر نظیر جامع الازهر و جامع عمروبن‌العاص نیز می‌پرداخت.
از جمله وظایف ابن‌حجر، کتابداری کتابخانه مدرسه محمودیه بود که نفیس‌ترین کتاب‌ها را داشت و این کتاب‌ها را قاضی برهان‌الدین ابراهیم‌بن عبدالرحیم ابن‌جماعه جمع کرد.
